How to Treat Fever in Kids?

Fever is not an illness but it is one part of the body’s natural defense against infection. Read full article to get information on how and when to treat fever, how to accurately measure a child’s temperature, signs and symptoms of fever etc.

Fever is a normal response of the body against infection. Nearly every child will develop a fever at some point and it is a frightening thing for a parent. The human body does a fairly good job of regulating temperature of body. Normally, the temperature of the human body is in the range of 96-100 degree Fahrenheit. Temperature of the body varies by several degrees throughout the day in a normal, healthy state. Generally, it is coolest in the morning and warmest in the evening.

Fever takes place when the temperature of the body is elevated as a result of the body’s thermostat being reset to a higher than usual temperature. In child, low-grade fevers having temperature below 102 degrees F can be treated at home, with or without medication. It can become very dangerous if it surpasses temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or 104 degree Fahrenheit. The body’s temperature can also rise for reasons other than fever such as; runners will raise their temperature when they run on a hot day. This is not a fever but it can be called as hyperthermia where the body thermostat remains set at “normal”.

Fever definition:

There is no single value that is defined as fever due to the normal variation in body temperature. Following are generally accepted values for fever.

    * Oral temperature above 99.5ºF (37.5ºC)
    * Rectal temperature above 100.4ºF (38ºC)
    * Axillary (armpit) temperature above 99ºF (37.2ºC)
    * Ear temperature above 100.4º (38ºC) in rectal mode or 99.5ºF (37.5ºC) in oral mode
    * Digital pacifier temperature above 100ºF (37.8ºC)

Causes of Fever in Children:

The most common cause of fever in children is infection. The most likely illnesses to cause fever include common viral and bacterial illnesses like colds, gastroenteritis, ear infections, croup, and bronchiolitis.

Packing a child who is less than three months old in too many clothes or blankets can raise the child’s temperature slightly. But, a rectal temperature of 101ºF (38.5ºC) or greater is not likely to be associated to packing and should be assessed.

Immunizations in some child can also cause fever. Depending upon which vaccination was given, the timing of the fever varies.

Probably, teething does not cause fever but in some particular studies have shown that temperatures of 101.3ºF (38.5ºC) or greater in teething.

Measurement of Child’s Temperature:

A rectal temperature is the most accurate in all children. When the proper technique is used, it is probable to accurately measure the temperature in the mouth (for children older than four or five years) or ear (for children older than six months). However, in a child older than 3 months, it’s fine to take it orally unless your doctor directs otherwise.

For an accurate measurement of your child’s temperature, follow the tips which are given below.

    * Before taking your child’s temperature, clean the thermometer in lukewarm soapy water and rinse it well with cool water.
    * Don’t bundle your baby or child up too tightly before taking his or her temperature.
    * Never leave your child alone while using a thermometer.
    * After you’re done using a thermometer, clean it with rubbing alcohol or wash it in cool, soapy water.
    * Be sure to label your rectal thermometer so that it isn’t accidentally used in your child’s mouth.
    * If you’re taking your child’s temperature orally, wait at least 20 minutes after your child finishes eating or drinking hot or cold foods and beverages to take his or her temperature.
    * Don’t take your child’s temperature right after he or she has had a bath.

Treatment of fever in Kids:

Without consulting your doctor, don’t give any medicine to babies who are younger than 2 months of age.

Medications:

Acetaminophen (one brand name: Children’s or Infants’ Tylenol) relieves pain and lowers fever. For the correct dosage for your child, check the package label or consult your doctor. The correct dosage of the medication depends on your child’s weight and age.

Another medicine, Ibuprofen can also be used to lower a fever in children over 6 months of age. Your doctor will tell you the correct dose for your child, so talk to your doctor before giving ibuprofen (two brand names: Children’s Advil, Children’s Motrin) to your child.

Sponging and baths:

Sponging involves placing a child in a bathtub and utilizing a damp washcloth to be relevant comfortably warm (85ºF or 30ºC) water to the entire body. As water evaporates from the skin surface, cooling of the body take place. So, the child should not be bundled in wet towels or submerged in water when this method of cooling is used.

Sponging is not as effective as anti-fever medications such as acetaminophen and so it is rarely used. Sponging should always be used in conjunction with anti-fever medications, such as acetaminophen, unless the child cannot tolerate these medications.

It is never recommended to use sponging with alcohol because alcohol fumes may be absorbed through the child’s skin or lungs.

Increase fluids:

Fever can increase a child’s risk of becoming dehydrated. Parents should encourage their child to drink an adequate amount of fluids to reduce the risk of dehydration. Supply your child with lots of fluids including water, juices, soups or gelatin to keep them well hydrated. The parent should consult the child’s healthcare provider if the child is unwilling or unable to drink fluids for more than a few hours.

Rest:

Tiredness and achy mostly experienced by child in fever. Parents should encourage their child to rest as much as the child wants. It is not essential to force the child to sleep or rest if he or she starts to feel better. When the temperature has been normal for 24 hours, children may return to school or other activities.

Consult your doctor if your child has the following symptoms with their fever:

    * More sleepy than usual
    * Complaining of a stiff neck or light hurting their eyes.
    * Vomiting and refusing to drink much
    * If your child is in pain
    * Rash
    * Problems with breathing

Key points to remember:

    * If your child seems well and is happy there is no need to treat a fever.
    * Fevers are common in children.
    * If your child is under 3 months and has a fever above 38 degreeC, take them to the doctor to be checked.
    * Watch your child for signs of the illness getting worse.
    * If your child seems unwell take their temperature. The normal temperature range is up to 38 degreeC.
    * If your child is miserable, treatment is needed to comfort your child. Give clear fluids and paracetamol. The response of the fever to treatment does not matter.

The film's director and production designers said that they drew inspiration for the floating rocks from mountains from around the world, including those in the Hunan province.

One of the park's quartz-sandstone pillars, the 3,544-foot Southern Sky Column, had been officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" in honor of the eponymous film in January 2010.

The World's first International Humanoid Robots Olympic Games kicked off on June 21, in China's Harbin's Institute of Technology. Two years after hosting a memorable edition of the human Olympic Games, China becomes the first country to host an Olympics dedicated to humanoid robots. Nineteen teams, from China, United States, Japan, South Korea or Germany have brought their best robots to compete in this historic three-day event.

To enter the competition, robots had to be less than 60 cm long, and have a human shape, with a head, two arms and two legs. Just like in the real Olympic Games, the sporty robots had to compete in multiple challenges, 24 to be exact, ranging from boxing, to weight-lifting, dancing, or sprint. But there are also some unusual domestic events, like cleaning or medical care.

Let's take our usual walk around the new-for-2010 Brutale 990R to take in all the details. At first glance, the casual observer may see very little clues that MV's new naked sportbike is in fact all-new. A closer inspection reveals that nearly nothing is carried over from the last generation. MV claims that over 85% of the 2010 Brutale is new and not interchangeable with the 2009 model, but it still might take a ride or two to prove the new one is sufficiently different from the old. Whether this seemingly carry-over design language is good or bad is up to individual tastes.

As far as we're concerned, the old Brutale was still one of the most visually stimulating designs on the market, and so the fact that the made-over 2010 model looks so much like the previous generation is anything but a bad thing. Further, the more time we spent, the more the unique details and updates jump out at you... so much so that we found ourselves just staring at every angle while conducting our photo shoot as the sun went down behind the mountains. It wasn't until we unloaded our memory card that we realized we had taken over 300 pictures in just one sitting.

Beyond those admittedly minor demerits, we love ourselves some Brutale. Yes, it is indeed less frenetic and easier-going than its forebear, but we're putting those attributes firmly in the Positives column, not the Negative. The newly refined machine is just as engaging as it ever was, the styling of the Brutale still stands up to our critical eyes and the updates made to the bike's ergonomics make it a much more inviting option in the face of stiff competition from the likes of the Ducati Streetfighter and Triumph Speed Triple. Finally, we think the $15,000 asking price is pretty damn attractive for what you're getting.

Honda announced today the U.S. pricing for the brand new 2011 CR-Z sport hybrid coupe which is set to hit the dealerships on August 24, 2010. Ok, so the new 2011 Honda CR-Z will go on sales with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $19,200, plus a destination and handling charge1 of $750.

For those who don’t know, the car carries a 1.5-liter i VTEC 4-cylinder engine which delivers 102 hp and an electric motor capable to deliver 20 hp. This means that the car has a total output of 122 hp and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 1,000 to 1,500 rpm (123 lb-ft on CVT-equipped models).

   8. While filing your nails, make sure to go in one direction only. Do not move the filer in a back-and-forth motion, as it makes your nails brittle.
   9. If you want to keep your nails strong and shiny, resort to nail buffing. It augments the blood supply to the nail, in turn stimulating its growth.
10. Stay away from artificial nails as much as possible. Apart from destroying the underlying nail with their chemicals and glue, they might also lead to fungal infection of the fingernails.
11. If you are suffering from the problem of hangnails, it is advisable to eat food rich in protein, vitamin C and folic acid.

Around 1,500 people showed up at the Bottle Inn pub, in Marshwood, Dorset, to see 61 contestants compete in the 2010 edition of the annual Nettle Eating World Championships.

On June 19th, competitors were each served two-feet-long stinging nettle stalks, from which they had to pluck and eat the leaves. After an hour of eating, the bare stalks were measured and contestants who ate the most nettles, named winners.

In the men's competition, first time participant Sam Cunningham managed to eat a whopping 74ft of stinging nettles, and claimed the title of king of the 2010 Nettle Eating World Championships. In the women's contest, Laura Revell managed to consume 40ft of nettle, and win the title of champion.

Being started at the beginning of the 20th century, industrial corporations by the end of World War II created strong managerial organizations for further development of new technological solutions. In the late 1970s and later on in 1980s, Japanese companies gained competitive advantage in the industries previously occupied by U.S. companies. Three different kinds of institutions led to success of Japanese companies: lifelong employment, banking system, and cross shareholding. As such, the innovative approach on organizational level tends to vary significantly from country to country and is a factor of the historical period and technological solutions applied within this period.

When it comes to speaking about firm innovation, there are three major facts, as highlighted by scholars. Firstly, technological knowledge is embodied in minds of individuals and is evident in the routine operations of every organization. Secondly, innovative knowledge is dynamic and evolves over time as individuals gain experience and are able to create new approaches. Going even further, innovative solutions are the products of intra and inter organizational interactions; as, innovation is a collective act. Thirdly, operations of companies are characterized by highly unstable and mobile environment. Having limited access to information and natural doubt, companies do not interpret and process the same information in a homogenous manner. Consequently, there is heterogeneity in technological capabilities of companies operating in industry. Going even further, heterogeneity is the driving force of innovation.

Innovation has also been viewed from a systematic approach, which resulted in emergence of the term Innovation Systems, or IS. The concept was introduced in 1980s as a result of extraordinary growth of Japanese and East Asian economies that received particular attention from scholars. At the same time, United States and European economies were in stagnation. The IS approach attempted to explain the dynamics of the changing configuration of economy. Two theoretical frameworks for the study have been introduced: the historical – empirical approach and interactive learning based approach. The two approaches are essentially different in that interactive learning based offers primarily a theoretical foundation, whereas historical – empirical approach establishes a framework for empirical research to examine performance of individual companies in varying national contexts.

As such, the concept of innovation has been discussed from three perspectives – organizational, systematic, and firm levels. Consequently, when discussing implications for business performance in the 21st century, it is crucial to consider all three dimensions.

Chrysler has decided to move the owner's manual for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee out of the paper world and into the ethereal realm of the iPhone App. According to the company, users will have access to all of the standard vehicle system information they're used to, but will also be able to view videos on special vehicle features, connect with other Grand Cherokee owners across the country and Chrysler will also be able to receive user feedback through a number of social media connections.

Located on the Parana river the Guaíra Falls were, in terms of total volume, the largest waterfall on earth. 1,750,000 cubic feet of water fell over this waterfall each second on average, compared to just 70,000 cubic feet per second for Niagra Falls. However, the falls were flooded in 1982 when a dam was created to take advantage of this massive flow rate. The Itaipu Dam is now the second most powerful hydroelectric dam in the world, after the Three Gorges Dam. The Itaipu Dam supplies 90% of the power consumed by Paraguay, and 19% of the power consumed by Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Iceberg B-15 was the largest ever recorded iceberg. It had an area of 3,100 km², making it larger than the island of Jamaica, and was created when part of the Ross Ice Shelf broke off in March 2000. In 2003, it broke apart, and one of the larger pieces (called B-15a) drifted north, eventually smashing into a glacier in 2005, breaking off an 8-km² section and forcing many antarctic maps to be rewritten. It drifted along the coast and eventually ran aground, breaking up once again. In 2006, a storm in Alaska (that’s right, Alaska) caused an ocean swell that travelled 13,500km, over 6 days, to Antarctica and broke up the largest remaining part even more. Almost a decade on, parts of the iceberg have still not melted, with the largest remaining part, still called B-15a, having an area of 1,700 km². The picture above shows B-15a (top left) in 2005, after drifting west into the Drygalski Glacier (bottom), breaking the end off into several pieces.

With a salinity of over 40%, Don Juan Pond is the saltiest body of water in the world. It is named after the two pilots who first investigated the pond in 1961, Lt Don Roe and Lt John Hickey. It is a small lake, only 100m by 300m, and on average 0.1m deep, but it is so salty that even in the Antarctic, where the temperature at the pond regularly drops to as low as -30 degrees Celsius, it never freezes. It is 18 times saltier than sea water, compared to the Dead Sea which is only 8 times saltier than sea water.

Rotorua is a city on the southern shores of the lake of the same name, in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. The city is known for its geothermal activity, with a number of geysers, notably the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa, and boiling mud pools (pictured above) located in the city. This thermal activity owes itself to the Rotorua caldera on which the city lies. Rotorua is also a top adventure destination and is New Zealand’s Maori cultural heartland. Rotorua city is renowned for its unique “rotten eggs” aroma, which is caused by the geothermal activity releasing sulphur compounds into the atmosphere. If you are ever visiting New Zealand – this is a city you must see. It was once home to the famed Pink and White Terraces and you can visit thermal wonderlands with sights that are truly astounding.

Greenland

This is more of a curiosity and not visually impressive, but 83-42 is believed to be the northernmost permanent point of land on earth. It is tiny, only 35m by 15m and 4m high, but is about 400 miles from the north pole. It beat the previous record holder, ATOW1996, when it was discovered in 1998, and lichens were found growing on it, suggesting it was not just one of the temporary gravel bars that are found in that region, which are regularly pushed around by the rough seas. The picture above features what is currently the northernmost point on land, one of the temporary gravel bars, photographed in 2007, as I could find no photos of 83-42 (For some reason, nobody feels the need to produce a photograph of a tiny rock in the middle of nowhere, which only five people have ever stepped foot on).

Socotra has been described as one of the most alien-looking place on Earth, and it’s not hard to see why. It is very isolated with a harsh, dry climate and as a result a third of its plant-life is found nowhere else, including the famous Dragon’s Blood Tree, a very-unnatural looking umbrella-shaped tree which produces red sap. There are also a large number of birds, spiders and other animals native to the island, and coral reefs around it which similarly have a large number of endemic (i.e. only found there) species. Socotra is considered the most biodiverse place in the Arabian sea, and is a World Heritage Site.

The Great Dune of Pyla

Since Europe has no deserts, you’d think the title of “Europe’s largest sand dune” would go to something that wasn’t particularly impressive. But you’d be wrong. The Great Dune of Pyla is 3km long, 500m wide and 100m high, and for reasons I will probably never understand, it seems to have formed in a forest. The dune is very steep on the side facing the forest and is famous for being a paragliding site. At the top it also provides spectacular views out to sea and over the forest (since the dune is far higher than any of the trees surrounding it).

Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater located approximately 43 miles (69 km) east of Flagstaff, near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. Because the US Department of the Interior Division of Names commonly recognizes names of natural features derived from the nearest post office, the feature acquired the name of “Meteor Crater” from the nearby post office named Meteor. The crater was created about 50,000 years ago during the Pleistocene epoch when the local climate on the Colorado Plateau was much cooler and damper. At the time, the area was an open grassland dotted with woodlands inhabited by woolly mammoths, giant ground sloths, and camels. It was probably not inhabited by humans; the earliest confirmed record of human habitation in the Americas dates from long after this impact. The object that excavated the crater was a nickel-iron meteorite about 50 meters (54 yards) across, which impacted the plain at a speed of several kilometers per second.

Mount Roraima

Mount Roraima is a pretty remarkable place. It is a tabletop mountain with sheer 400-metre high cliffs on all sides. There is only one ‘easy’ way up, on a natural staircase-like ramp on the Venezuelan side – to get up any other way takes and experienced rock climber. On the top of the mountain it rains almost every day, washing away most of the nutrients for plants to grow and creating a unique landscape on the bare sandstone surface. This also creates some of the highest waterfalls in the world over the sides (Angel falls is located on a similar tabletop mountain some 130 miles away). Though there are only a few marshes on the mountain where vegetation can grow properly, these contain many species unique to the mountain, including a species of carnivorous pitcher plant.

The Door To Hell

The Door to Hell, as local residents at the nearby town of Darvaza have dubbed it, is a 70 meter wide crater in Turkmenistan that has been burning continuously for 35 years. In 1971, geologists drilling for gas deposits uncovered a huge underground cavern, which caused the ground over it to collapse, taking down all their equipment and their camp with it. Since the cavern was filled poisonous gas, they dared not go down to retrieve their equipment, and to prevent the gas escaping they ignited it, hoping it would burn itself out in a couple of days. Unfortunately, there was a slight miscalculation as to the amount of gas that was trapped, and the crater continues to burn to this day.
